Wordless Wednesday

hawk in flight

hawk taking flight

(Well, almost wordless. I can't resist SOME explanation)

In one of those golden moments in Ethiopia
I sat on the steps of the staff housing
at the base camp in Arb Gebya
watching Hawk in flight.
He'd smelled the remains of the goat
they'd slaughtered for our supper
and he hoped for a morsel.
Soundlessly, he landed
on a fence not far from me.
As I fixed my camera on him
he spread his mighty wings
and took flight.
Glorious Hawk,
I thank you
for the brief and beautiful visit.

That is beautiful.

I'm reading a book you might like if you haven't read it yet - There Is No Me Without You by Melissa Fay Greene. It's about a woman in Addis who takes in orphans. Well written and lots of good info about the AIDS crisis in Ethiopia.

LOL liz, I hadn't thought of you when I read that!!!!!

Heather. We have hawks, falcons and one lone eagle out here.
The other dayIwas picking the boy up and a hawk swooped in front of my car and continued to do so for the entire trip.
When I went home and dug out my aboriginal study handouts. The hawk is seen as a messenger from the cretor to remind us to
"hear, see and watch in truth"
peace
Hope,
still trying to figer out how come I can't sign in.

Sorry Liz - I didn't mean to traumatize you! I'll be sure not to post pictures of the demise of the poor goat.

If you want to avoid eating goat meat, you'd better not visit Africa. I've eaten enough goat meat there to last me a lifetime!

I have luckily had a few chances to be entranced by such lovely birds of prey. Deadly, but beautiful nontheless.

Lovely photos!
